I have attempted multiple times to write a thought provoking blog post about Thanksgiving, only to have my thoughts being interrupted by Nat King Cole. I know, you have a puzzled look on your face. Ross loves to search YouTube and play his favorites…over and over and over again! Not the whole song but just a few measures. Rewinding and rewinding and rewinding! We have become accustomed to this, as it’s been going on since he figured out how to use the VCR as a toddler. The last several days Nat’s version of ‘Mona Lisa’ has been his favorite. We sit together at the dining room table. Me with my laptop, Ross with his iPad and Nat providing background music.
Now, I love Nat King Cole and ‘Mona Lisa’, and being the music lover I am I start singing along. So here you go, this is all I get… Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa, men have named you… Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa, men have named you… Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa, men have named you… Never to reaching any further into the song! Frustrating to say the least!
We ask him to let it play. His response is, “Let go” or “that way” accompanied by laughter and pointing for us to move away from him. I find myself repeating the tune in my head many times throughout the day and even when I’m trying to nod off to sleep. At that moment I realize I’ve forgotten the rest of the song!
I do have much for which to be thankful, including time at the table with Ross and sharing his love of music, even when I don’t get the complete version!
Now that you have the tune playing in your head, I’ll at least give you the rest of the lyrics, not to leave you hanging!
Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa, men have named you
You’re so like the lady with the mystic smile
Is it only ’cause you’re lonely they have blamed you?
For that Mona Lisa strangeness in your smile?
Do you smile to tempt a lover, Mona Lisa?
Or is this your way to hide a broken heart?
Many dreams have been brought to your doorstep
They just lie there and they die there
Are you warm, are you real, Mona Lisa?
Or just a cold and lonely lovely work of art?
Do you smile to tempt a lover, Mona Lisa?
Or is this your way to hide a broken heart?
Many dreams have been brought to your doorstep
They just lie there and they die there
Are you warm, are you real, Mona Lisa?
Or just a cold and lonely lovely work of art?
Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa.
